Will Beck, who has long captivated viewers as the charismatic and complex Dr. Dylan Keogh on Casualty, promises that the upcoming series will be an emotional whirlwind. In a new interview, Will discusses Dylan’s evolving relationships, the depth of the new series, and what’s next for Holby’s most enigmatic doctor.
‘The first thing that comes to mind is chaos,’ Will teased about the new series. ‘It’s a real roller coaster ride. I think particularly for Jodie, it’s a real opportunity for people to get to know her. Dylan, strangely enough, gets caught up in her situation because of their shared emotional connection.’
Fans can look forward to seeing a more vulnerable side to the typically gruff Dylan this series. ‘Dylan remains charismatic, focused, strong, loyal – but this season we see his vulnerable, caring side. He’s actually so soft. The exterior can be a little gruff, but anybody that remembers episodes with Dylan’s dad will understand where that might have come from,’ Will explained.
‘In these episodes, he’s demonstrating care. My feeling is that perhaps he’s somebody who cares to a fault.’ ‘I think he recognises characteristics from Jodie that remind him of his own mum. He wants to help her make a better go of things, using lessons from his own childhood regrets. It’s like the boy in him wants her to avoid the mistakes he blames himself for.’
‘There’s one episode in this box set that really focuses on Dylan’s response to Jodie’s situation, and those are always so much fun to do. You get to drive the narrative a little bit more. It’s always a privilege to be a part of such impactful storytelling.’ Dylan’s relationship with Sophia also continues to evolve in unexpected ways. ‘It’s authentically complex and difficult to read. They are both presented with a moment where they must confront their feelings, leading Dylan to some self-examination,’ he said.
As for the future, Will remains as intrigued as fans. ‘For Dylan, his heart has been hardened over the last five or six years by various events. It would be fascinating to see what happens if that protective shell shatters. Anything that puts Dylan at the centre of the action is always exciting because I get to discover more about him along with the audience.’
