Casualty has shared a first-look photo of new cast member Olly Rix as Flynn Byron.
The actor, known for portraying Matthew Aylward on Call the Midwife, has joined the medical drama in its upcoming miniseries ‘Internal Affairs’ and will make his first appearance in March.
Flynn joins the team at Holby City Emergency Department as its new clinical lead consultant, following a tour of duty.
He’s described as a “charming but complicated” doctor who, while troubled by past issues, is eager to make a difference and change a system that’s weighed down by bureaucracy.
“It’s been a pleasure to join the Casualty cast in such a dynamic role,” said Rix. “Flynn crashes into the world of it from a very different background, resulting in a complex and exciting story in ‘Internal Affairs’ and beyond.
“It’s a brilliant new chapter for the show and I am excited for the audience to get to know Flynn.”
Casualty’s executive producer Roxanne Harvey hopes that Flynn’s storyline will resonate with viewers.
She added that his journey will explore “the often emotional toll of working in the NHS, the cost of making tough decisions, and the possibility of redemption when you’re confronted with the consequences of your actions”.
Rix will star alongside Cold Feet, Downton Abbey and Toast of London actor Robert Bathurst, who is making a guest appearance as Russell Whitelaw.
Russell is a skilled surgeon “who has commanded the operating room for years with his unmatched skill and domineering personality”.
“Joining Casualty for three months was very enjoyable; it’s so well run, well written and well directed,” Bathurst said.
“They built an operating theatre especially for this block of stories so all of us, actors and crew, were on a voyage of discovery.
“As always with Casualty there were brilliantly qualified advisers on hand to make it seem as real as possible. The Emergency Department film set was just like being in a hospital – I kept getting lost.”
Casualty airs on Saturday nights on BBC One and now streams first on BBC iPlayer, where episodes are released at 6am on the day of transmission.
