You could have been forgiven for thinking tonight that Casualty scriptwriters had infiltrated the new series of BBC1’s Ambulance.

As West Midlands paramedic Nat Greaves embarked on her shift, a call came in that her own daughter Jessica, who has cerebral palsy, had become unresponsive at school.

To add to the real-life drama it was also her 16th birthday – a birthday that, during Jess’ early years, Nat thought she would never live to see.

I was so wrapped up in the drama I didn’t even pause to say: “Hang on, there’s no way the BBC would show this if there’s an unhappy ending.”

I’d probably have been wrong. The previous two series have not shied away from showing upsetting scenes and leaving us in tears.
Luckily, Jessica survived. What happened next, though, I found pretty incredible.

Her mum was straight back at work for her next shift, with the heartbreaking job of cutting down the body of a man who’d hanged himself.

If you weren’t already in awe of the amazing workers in our NHS, watch this series and fall in line.
