It seems Roo Stewart (Georgie Parker) has been giving foster child Eliza Sherwood (Martha Kate Morgan) the benefit of the doubt for quite some time, but recent events are finally forcing Roo to see Eliza’s unsettling “true colours.”
While Roo initially approached Eliza with empathy, understanding that the young girl had a traumatic past (her foster home burned down), Eliza’s behaviour has become increasingly disturbing, pushing Roo to confront the reality of her manipulative and potentially dangerous tendencies.
Here’s how Roo starts to see Eliza’s true colours:
- Obsession with Dark Themes: Eliza has exhibited a fascination with weaponry, death, and particularly, Harper Matheson’s baby. This disturbing interest has been a red flag for others, but Roo has tried to explain it away as coping mechanisms from trauma.
- Lying and Putting Alf in Danger: In a particularly alarming incident, Alf Stewart (Ray Meagher) suffered chest pains and asked Eliza to retrieve his heart medication. Eliza not only dawdled but then lied, claiming she couldn’t find the pills, when in reality, she had them in her pocket. This direct act of malice and deception puts Alf’s life at risk, making it impossible for Roo to ignore.
- Violent Outbursts and Threats: Eliza’s anger has escalated, turning physical at times. She was seen attacking another youth program participant, Scott, and then subtly threatening him to keep quiet about a stolen item. Marilyn Chambers (Emily Symons) has also experienced Eliza’s threats, leading Marilyn to move out of the shared house.
- The Stolen Ultrasound Photo: Roo catches Eliza looking at Harper’s ultrasound photo in the diner. When confronted, Eliza openly admits to taking it, showing no remorse and justifying it by claiming she was “fascinated by the baby.” This deeply unsettling act, coupled with her strange fascination for Harper’s pregnancy, clearly disturbs Roo.
- Manipulative Behavior: Eliza has consistently played on Roo’s sympathy, feigning sadness or vulnerability when confronted, only to reveal a colder, more calculating side shortly after. Marilyn has explicitly warned Roo about Eliza’s manipulative tendencies, but Roo has been slow to accept it, wanting to believe she could help the troubled teen.
These incidents, particularly the deliberate act of withholding Alf’s medication and the unsettling obsession with Harper’s baby, are making it increasingly clear to Roo that Eliza’s issues run far deeper than simple trauma. Roo is finally being forced to confront the dark and manipulative side of Eliza’s personality, realizing that the girl she’s taken under her wing might pose a genuine danger to herself and others.
