This week on Casualty, Holby ED is thrown into unfamiliar territory when Cal and Dylan are faced with one of the most unusual cases of their careers — a woman who claims she is in love… with a building.
When Ava Linton, 40, arrives in the ED after injuring herself near a well-known civic centre, the team assumes it’s a simple case of a fall. But things take a strange turn when she becomes visibly distressed about being separated from the building — referring to it as “him” and insisting it’s not just a structure, but her partner.
At first, Cal finds the situation amusing, joking about it with the staff. But Dylan is more cautious, suspecting that Ava’s behaviour may be linked to a deeper psychological issue. Both men are drawn into a case that blurs the line between medical treatment and emotional care.
During her assessment, Ava calmly explains her feelings. She speaks about the building with warmth and intimacy, describing it as supportive, comforting, and constant — qualities she says she’s never found in people. The staff soon realise that Ava is living with objectophilia, a rare condition where individuals form romantic or emotional attachments to inanimate objects.
“I’ve had enough of people letting me down,” Ava tells Cal. “This building… it’s the only thing that’s never hurt me.”
While Dylan remains clinical and measured, focusing on the potential mental health implications, Cal starts to see beyond the surface. He realises that Ava’s attachment is rooted in past trauma — a life marked by abandonment, neglect, and emotional instability. To her, the building isn’t just an object — it represents the love and reliability she’s always craved.
What initially seemed bizarre becomes increasingly moving, and the episode challenges both doctors in different ways. Dylan grapples with how to proceed responsibly, while Cal struggles with his growing empathy for Ava’s situation.
“She’s not crazy,” Cal says to Dylan. “She’s just found comfort in the one thing that never gave up on her.”
As the team debates whether Ava needs psychiatric intervention or simply kindness and support, tensions rise. With hospital management concerned about potential media attention, the pressure is on to reach a decision quickly. But Dylan and Cal know there’s no easy answer.
The storyline forces the team to confront a difficult truth: sometimes, what looks unusual on the outside can be a sign of something deeply human — the need to feel safe, valued, and loved.
In an episode filled with compassion and complexity, Cal and Dylan must choose how to treat not just a condition, but the person behind it.
