In April, Paramount Pictures excited fans with the official announcement of the eighth Transformers movie, which will be a crossover with G.I. Joe. These two franchises have already met in various comics, both being under the Hasbro umbrella. Producers have decided to harness the potential of creating a full-fledged Cinematic Universe from Hasbro projects. G.I. Joe has had two movies and a soft reboot with the Snake Eyes solo movie. It’s still uncertain if any previous G.I. Joe projects will be considered canon or if we’ll see returning actors. Despite its weak box office performance and vague plot, Snake Eyes managed to break even and received positive reviews for Henry Golding’s performance. Golding, a lifelong fan of both Transformers and G.I. Joe, recently hinted at his potential involvement in Transformers 8 in an interview, expressing his openness to the idea.
Excitingly, Steven Spielberg is set to direct this project, making it poised to be a blockbuster hit. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, producer of Rise of the Beasts, mentioned that old actors could return if the script requires it. The plan is to develop Hasbro movies as standalone stories that occasionally intersect. G.I. Joe will now be part of this new storyline, as hinted in Rise of the Beasts. However, this doesn’t mean there won’t be separate projects for Transformers and G.I. Joe. With the eighth movie, G.I. Joe officially joins the Transformers universe, aiming for a one-time crossover to explore further opportunities.
In line with this approach, the animated movie Transformers One will delve into the origins of Optimus Prime and Megatron. Chris Hemsworth, who voices Optimus, is rumored to play a live-action role as well. According to Deadline, Hemsworth has been offered a lead role in the Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover, possibly as Duke. The main cast of Rise of the Beasts is expected to return, with Anthony Ramos’s Noah set to join G.I. Joe and continue playing a significant role in the franchise.
The crossover isn’t a new concept, as it originates from a comic series published by Marvel in the 80s. The narrative begins with the Cobra organization uncovering a Decepticon spacecraft and using its technology to enhance their military power. This leads to an alliance between Cobra and the Decepticons, setting the stage for epic clashes and showdowns with G.I. Joe and the Autobots. The film adaptation is said to stay true to the spirit of the original comic series. The unnamed Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover is anticipated for a 2026 release, with production starting early next year. Stay tuned for more details as they emerge!
