After an impressive 37-year tenure, Derek Thompson has decided to depart from the
BBC’s medical drama “Casualty,” where he has portrayed the beloved character
Charlie Fairhead since the show’s inception in 1986. Thompson’s portrayal of Charlie,
inspired by real-life nurse Pete Salt, has been a cornerstone of the series, with the character appearing in nearly 900 episodes. Throughout his time on the show, Charlie has been central to numerous pivotal storylines, including surviving a stabbing incident and enduring a near-fatal cardiac arrest during a gang siege.
His enduring presence and compassionate nature have made him an iconic figure in British television. Thompson’s final scenes are slated to air in 2024, culminating in a compelling exit storyline that promises to place Charlie at the forefront of the action. Reflecting on his departure,
Thompson expressed gratitude for the inspiration behind his character and the opportunity to bring Charlie’s compassion and heroism to life. Executive Producer Jon Sen lauded Thompson’s significant contribution, noting that his portrayal has become woven into the fabric of British TV history. As fans anticipate Charlie’s final chapter, the show’s producers have hinted at an emotionally charged and fitting farewell for the character who has been the heart of the emergency department for nearly four decades.
