Casualty – all the biggest summer stories in new trailer

The ED is set for a busy few months…

Casualty spoilers follow.

Note: This article contains a discussion of topics including suicide.

It has only been a few days since that powerful episode of Casualty, which saw Rash reach breaking point and Patrick leave his role as clinical lead. But things move on quickly in the ED, as the next run of episodes – titled ‘Storm Damage’ – begins on Saturday.

One major change is that this Saturday (June 15), Casualty will move to BBC Two, as football takes over BBC One for coverage of Euro 2024.

Meanwhile, the new Casualty trailer has dropped, previewing a host of exciting new stories that will unfold throughout the summer. The two-minute clip is packed with content, so before things kick off this weekend, let’s slow down and dissect what is in store over the next few months:

A dangerous storm hits

From the series title, it’s not a surprise that these episodes will be based around a storm that hits Holby. In the first episode, Cam and Siobhan find themselves caught in a city-wide flash flood having to treat a patient in rough conditions, and they face a traumatic shift.

Cam’s past and future

A big focus in the new series will be on Cam, who recently became a senior band 5 nurse. But he is haunted by the aftermath of a tricky shift at work and is left questioning whether the chaotic ED is really for him.

Siobhan is seen giving Cam a stern telling off, and he says, “I can’t be here anymore. I don’t want to be here,” with his future in Holby seemingly up in the air.

Cam will have even more to deal with, as he is also forced to confront his past when it washes into Holby. We know that he has a history with new board member Jamie, played by Emmerdale’s Ryan Hawley.

But the trailer also shows another new face who seems to know Cam, telling him, “I’m broken, Cam. You’re broken too,” before turning violent. Just who is this character?

Stevie’s new connection

BBC

Stevie spent a lot of the last series in a crime-fighting duo with Dylan, as they attempted to gather evidence to oust Patrick from his job. Now in the new episodes, she will have a new focus, when out on a job she catches the eye of firefighter Rich.

Sparks fly between the pair, but will a shocking connection burn them both?

Regardless, things are set to get messy, with the pair sharing a kiss, while in another clip, Stevie is seen in tears.

Iain in danger

BBC

Casualty fans rejoiced when Iain and Faith finally got back together during the last series, sharing a kiss that confirmed their feelings were still there. As they become a more stable couple, Iain is finding his footing as a father-figure, as he and Faith’s son Luka grow closer.

“We come as a family, and we’re your family if you want us,” Faith says.

But when Iain, Luka and Faith are all under threat, how far will Iain go to protect his new family?

A shocking clip in the trailer shows Iain being brutally attacked, while another teases Iain putting his life at risk to save a man whose car has sunk underwater.

Dylan meets Sophia

BBC

Dylan succeeded in his mission to get rid of Patrick, following his long-time concerns about patient safety – and he thrives in the ED now he has gone.

But it isn’t long before Dylan has made a new enemy, as he clashes with new psych liaison nurse Sophia – played by ex-EastEnders actor Kellie Shirley. Can Dylan find a friend rather than another foe?

Tariq looks out for Rash

tariq hussein, casualty

BBC

Rash was a focus of the previous series, with an exploration of his mental health culminating in his shocking suicide attempt.

Viewers last saw Rash in intensive care, but as the new series begins, he has thankfully returned to the ED and is getting used to being back at work. Cousin Tariq is by his side, and he steps up to be Rash’s rock. But will someone be looking out for Tariq when he crumbles?

Jacob searches for Blake

jacob masters, jan jenning, casualty

BBC

While the last episode of Casualty was harrowing, Jacob’s story felt more hopeful. He was considering leaving his paramedic role, after struggling to balance caring for his grandson Carter. But the shocking events involving Rash put things into perspective for Jacob and he decided to stick around, accepting Jan’s offer of a place to stay.

In the new series, Jacob and Jan make a solid tag team, juggling 999 calls and nursery drop offs as they both care for Carter. But when the search for Carter’s dad intensifies, will they be able to balance the personal and professional?

It is possible that Jacob’s hunt for his son Blake might turn tragic, as in one clip, he is seen having to identify a body. But who is it?

Teddy’s next steps

teddy gowan in casualty

BBC Studios

At the end of the last series, Teddy found out that he was on long-term suspension, the consequences of his assault on a patient.

The good news is that Teddy is back at work in the new series, as he can be seen once again donning his paramedics’ uniform in the trailer.

But things won’t be easy as he returns to his job, as Teddy and Iain appear to be involved in a dramatic ambulance crash in a future episode.

Nicole’s pregnancy

nicole piper, casualty

BBC

Nicole was a new character in the previous series, and quickly dropped the bombshell that she was pregnant, as a surrogate for her friend Rosie.

The situation was left up in the air, as when they found out that the baby will have Down’s syndrome, Rosie wanted to terminate the pregnancy while Nicole disagreed.

The trailer shows Nicole with a newborn baby, with friend and colleague Ngozi continuing to be by her side. But what happens between now and the baby’s birth? There have been hints about why Nicole offered to be a surrogate in the first place, and it’s likely that this story is far from over.

Siobhan’s new role

siobhan mckenzie, casualty

BBC

At the heart of this series will be Siobhan, who has stepped up to become the new clinical lead in the ED. Her story in this series remains unclear from the trailer, but she will have to steer her team through their professional and personal struggles in future episodes.

“This department, it’s a family,” she says in the clip. “Now, that doesn’t mean that we’ll always get on, but it does mean that when our backs are against the wall, when people come in through that door, people who need us, it means that we pull together, we stick together.”

How will Siobhan cope, and what will the next months hold for her?

Casualty airs on Saturday nights on BBC One and now streams first on BBC iPlayer, where episodes are released at 6am on the day of transmission.
