Mali’s Secret Guilt

Kirby spends her day searching for Mali after he fails to show up for his surfing class, leaving her to handle the confusion caused by his absence. When Mali finally appears, he’s evasive and vague about where he’s been, leaving Kirby furious and worried.

Concerned, Kirby presses him, asking if the River Boys are hassling him again, but Mali brushes her off, refusing to answer and insisting she take over his next class.

Tane, however, manages to get through to Mali, who admits he’s struggling with guilt over being involved in a fight and the fallout from being questioned in connection to a River Boys-related murder case. Mali confesses that he barely recognizes himself anymore, leaving Tane trying to reassure his friend that he can move forward. But for Mali, the weight of his actions still looms heavily.

Irene’s Denial Spirals Out of Control

Meanwhile, Irene’s drinking continues to worry those around her. John decides to step in after Irene misses an AA meeting, showing up at her house to express his concerns. However, Irene dismisses his worries, claiming that because she’s drinking openly and not in secret like before, she doesn’t have a problem.

To prove she’s fine, Irene decides to host a dinner party, inviting Leah, Justin, Marilyn, and John. Her goal? To show her friends that she’s in control.

The evening begins with Irene pouring wine for her guests, determined to present an image of normalcy. Suspicious, John uses a moment of distraction to search the kitchen, but Irene catches him in the act. She confronts him and insists he sit down, calling attention to his behavior.

As the evening progresses, Irene raises a toast to honesty and speaking one’s truth. But this proves to be the breaking point for John, who accuses Irene of lying to herself and everyone else. He declares that he refuses to enable her behavior and storms out of the dinner party, leaving the room in stunned silence.
