
Home and Away star Lynne McGranger announces she’s leaving the hit soap after 33 years: ‘Bittersweet to be closing the chapter’

Lynne McGranger, known for her portrayal of the iconic character Irene Roberts on the long-running Australian soap Home and Away, has announced she’s leaving the show.
In a shock statement, the actress, 72, said she’s stepping down from her “dream role” after 33 years.
She said the decision for her is “bittersweet,” but thanked the fans for their “support” over the years and the cast and crew.
“After almost 33 years in my dream role and working everyday with people who I love, respect and whom I now consider family, it’s bittersweet to be closing the chapter on what has been the best and longest gig of my life,” she said in a statement.
She added a teaser for dedicated fans, saying she likes the way her character will leave Summer Bay.
She added: “I am forever grateful to the best production crew in the world and to our genius writers – whose doors are always open – for everything they have done for Irene over the past 33-odd years, and I am so proud of the storyline which will see Irene out of the Bay. Above all, a massive, heartfelt thank you to the fans for your continued love and support.”
She reportedly holds the title for the longest-serving female actor in an Aussie drama, which is a remarkable feat.
Home and Away also shared a statement and tribute to the actress on Sunday evening, writing on their official Instagram page, calling Irene “our beloved Diner Queen”.
“After nearly 33 incredible years, our beloved Diner Queen, Irene, is waving goodbye to Summer Bay! 👋 🌊,” the post read.
They revealed her final scenes on the show will air later this year.

“While Lynne wraps up filming at the end of March, fans can still enjoy many more months of Irene’s iconic slang and warm presence before her final episode airs later this year,” the show wrote.
Fans were left shocked at the news, with one writing: “She is one in a million.”
“You’ve been amazing to watch over the years I’ve been growing up and will be sorely missed. Good luck with your future endeavours,” another added.
McGranger joined the hit show back in 1993. Before her long tenure on the show, she appeared on shows including The Flying Doctors.
