Lucy Jo Hudson, 41, first made her debut as Katy Harris on the long-running ITV serial drama in November 2002.

She was a mainstay on Coronation Street for three years until she left in 2005.

But now she will appear in the forthcoming episodes of Casualty which will focus on the importance of giving blood.

In the Christmas special, the staff in the hospital’s emergency department are faced with a dire blood shortage.

The details of her character are currently being kept closely under wraps but when promoted the series on her social media, she teased that the episode will be emotional.

Alongside a preview snap of her episode, she wrote: ” Don’t miss it. Saturday 21st December 9.20pm BBC1 Christmas Day Special Casualty @bbccasualtyofficial”

Adding: “Make sure you have a box of tissues at the ready.”

But the star previously appeared in another Christmas special of Casualty in 2010 as a character named Deena Richards.

When Lucy was first introduced on the soap, her initial storylines focused on the family’s placement on the witness protection programme.

They were victimised in a gangland murder trial as Angela (Kathryn Hunt) was giving evidence against one of the perpetrators.

The character also embarked on a high-profile romance with Martin Platt (Sean Wilson).

When she stepped back from the soap, her exit storyline was known to be one of the most sensational in the soap’s history.

The character was called ‘Killer Katie’ as she had an abortion, murdered her father, and then she committed suicide when her mother took the blame.

After her tenure in Weatherfield, the actress went onto play Donna-Marie Quinn in Channel 4’s Hollyoaks.

Lucy was also known for performance as Rhiannon Davis, which won the villain of the year award at the British Soap Awards in 2017.
