If you’ve had a TV on between 1988 and now, you’re likely familiar with Georgie Parker—one of Australia’s most iconic actresses and a beloved TV star. Parker made her breakthrough in 1988 with her role in A Country Practice, and since then, she has become a household name, known for her captivating performances in shows like All Saints and her enduring role as Roo Stewart in Home and Away. However, what many might not know is that Georgie Parker’s career and life have been shaped by personal struggles, including a serious medical condition that has been a constant challenge.
At the age of 13, Parker’s dreams of becoming a ballet dancer were crushed when she was diagnosed with scoliosis, a condition that required her to wear a back brace. This life-altering diagnosis pushed her to shift her focus from dance to acting. Reflecting on this turning point in a past interview with Stellar, Parker shared how early in life, she learned that her appearance was only part of who she was. “I had to learn or rather embrace very early on that how I looked was only the tip of the iceberg,” she explained. She credits this shift in mindset as helping her remain resilient throughout her career. “Being told no helped me strategize,” she added, emphasizing her ability to adapt and move forward despite setbacks.
Though her acting career took off after leaving ballet behind, Parker continues to live with the effects of scoliosis. Now, at 59, she lives with an 80-degree curvature in her spine and has had to undergo a double hip replacement. The condition is a daily struggle for Parker, but she approaches it with remarkable strength. “I can’t say it hasn’t been difficult, but I wouldn’t change it now,” she said. This physical challenge has not only shaped her career but has also contributed to her perspective on aging and resilience. As Parker approaches her 60th birthday, she reflects on the societal pressures surrounding aging. “There seems to be a whole different rhetoric around men aging and women aging, but it all means the same thing—we all end up in the same place,” she said. For her, it’s important not to get caught up in appearances, especially as an actor. “You just don’t want to be thinking about how you look,” she added.
Parker’s career has brought a wide variety of roles, showcasing her versatility. From her eccentric role as Lucy in A Country Practice to playing Terry, the determined character in All Saints, Parker has embraced a range of personalities that showcase her depth as an actress. But her role as Roo Stewart in Home and Away, a part she has played since 2011, holds special significance. She describes Roo as a “rough diamond” and expresses how fulfilling it has been to play a character that allows her to balance her creative needs with her family life.
Beyond her successful career, Parker is a proud mother to her 24-year-old daughter, Holly, whom she shares with her husband, screenwriter Steve Worland. The couple married in 1999, and Parker recalls the overwhelming yet thrilling time in her life when she won her first Gold Logie while adjusting to motherhood. She admits that it was a stressful period, trying to juggle career success and family life, but she found a deep sense of fulfillment in both. “I was split between a lot of things. It was a very stressful time while also being a very stimulating time,” Parker revealed in a past TV Week interview. “The struggle I had was that I’d never chased that kind of success, so when I got it, I was doing it more because I wanted the show to succeed.”
Throughout her career, Parker has developed deep bonds with her co-stars and the crew, especially those who worked with her on A Country Practice. “I love the crew, many of whom worked on A Country Practice and I’ve worked with since I was 22,” she shared. This long-standing connection with the people she works with has created a tight-knit family atmosphere on set, which she greatly values. “It’s a very happy, tight-knit family, and that makes it incredibly enjoyable,” she said.
Now, as Parker reflects on her life and career, she finds strength in her personal journey, both as an actress and as a mother. “My mom has just turned 90 and dad is 94, and they defy what it is to be any age,” she proudly added, proving that age and physical challenges don’t define who you are or what you can achieve.
